  10. VDOMail release 1.21.

  25. 1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
  26. -----------------------
  27. * VDOMail is a video based messaging system. It can capture a 
  28.   video clip, compress it to a relatively VERY small file in AVI 
  29.   format, and send it as a standard e-mail message via a TCP/IP 
  30.   network. 
  31.  
  32. * The user can control the quality, and by that control the 
  33.   size of the recorded clip.
  34.  
  35. * The straightforward and easy-to-use GUI makes VDOMail 
  36.   attractive for non-sophisticated users.
  37.  
  38. * VDOMail delivers e-mail by either connecting directly to an 
  39.   e-mail server (via SMTP protocol), or by utilizing a MAPI 
  40.   compliant mailer, if present, enabling built-in features like 
  41.   address book, spelling, etc.
  42.  
  43. * VDOMail can also generate audio only messages, which are 
  44.   sent with a postcard selected by the sender. These postcards 
  45.   can be imported, created (grabbed) or chosen from the supplied 
  46.   VDOMail Postcard gallery.

  48. * VDOMail supports both Dial-up connection and LAN connection.
  49.  
  50. * VDOMail can be configured to send self-extracting messages, 
  51.   which encapsulate a remote-installer. This remote-installer 
  52.   analyzes the recipient's computer and if needed, downloads and 
  53.   installs the software to view the video clips (approx. 80 KB 
  54.   overhead).

  56. * VDOMail can also be configured to send the needed decoders 
  57.   as another attachment in the message. This means though that 
  58.   the message will be quite large (approx. 270 KB overhead).

  67.   processor.
  68. * For audio-only messages: PC with a minimum 486DX2 processor 
  69. * 16 MB RAM minimum

  72. * Video Capture Card (not required for audio only messages)
  73. * Display Card with High Color or True Color  - 16 bit (65,536 
  74.   colors) and above

  87. 3. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE

  89. VDOMail Installation procedure will install the following:
  90.  
  91. * VDOMail Recorder software including online help
  92. * VDOMail Uninstall procedure
  93. * A link to VDOnet web site

  95. To install VDOMail: 
  96. 1. Double Click the installation file
  97. 2. Follow instructions as they appear on the screen.

  100. 4. LIMITATIONS
  101. ------------------------
  102. * Non-VFW (Video For Windows) compliant capture cards (like 
  103.   FireWire) are not supported.
  104. * In SMTP mode (non-MAPI), no record of sent messages is kept. 
  105.   Workaround: Use "File|Save as..." to save the message before 
  106.   you record a new one.
  107. * AOL users: Please refer to the section "AOL users" below.

  110. 5. AOL USERS
  111. ------------------------
  112. VDOMail Senders
  113. ---------------
  114. * Does not support sending VDOMail with AOL mail client.

  116. VDOMail Recipients
  117. ------------------
  118. * AOL mail client cannot open multiple attachments. If you 
  119.   choose to attach decoders, two attachments will be created. 
  120.   The AOL mail client will tell the recipient this:
  121.     "This message is a multi-part MIME message and will be 
  122.      saved with the default filename ????????.mim".
  123.  
  124.   This file cannot be opened with the standard AOL software. 
  125.   Here's AOL's solution:
  126.     "There are freeware utilities (a program that anyone can 
  127.      use for free) called WinCode (for Windows users) ... 
  128.      that can help. 
  129.      How To Find WinCode, a MIME Decoder (for Windows Users): 
  130.      * You can download WinCode (Wincode v2.7.3c) from this 
  131.        Web site:   
  132.          http://www.members.global2000.net/snappy/software.html. 
  133.  
  134.        ... Install and run the utility according to the 
  135.        instructions."

  138. 6. TECHNICAL SUPPORT

  143. 7. KNOWN BUGS
  144. ------------------------
  145. * Cyrix processors with old motherboards or old Windows 95 
  146.   sometimes cause white video self-view.
  147. * Sometimes bad sync between audio and video.
  148.   Workaround: Record again.
  149. * Sometimes after "Trial" dialog the application will take 
  150.   relatively long time to start.
  151. * When the "Trial" dialog is visible, it does not appear on 
  152.   the Task bar.
  153. * Sometimes the first recording takes relatively longer to 
  154.   start, and the reaction to "Record" and "Stop" is relatively 
  155.   slow.
  156.   Workaround: Record again.
  157. * Problems with Netscape Communicator 4.0X as your MAPI mail 
  158.   client:
  159.   a) No instructions are included within the message.
  160.      Workaround: Manually add the text:

  173.    b) Attach decoders option does not work - only the 
  174.       VDOMail.avi is attached to the message.
  175.       Workaround: Manually send another mail with the file 
  176.       decode20.exe from the VDOMail installation folder 
  177.       attached.

  179. * Local message view might not function properly if NetShow 
  180.   3.0 beta installed.
